Marshmallow root is a native plant of Europe and parts of Asia and Africa. Established throughout the ancient Egyptian, Arabian, Greek, and Roman cultures, this herb has continually been utilized for at least 2,000 years. The plant spread from Greece to Arabia and India, where it became an important herb in Ayurvedic and Unani healing traditions. In Ayurveda, the root was used to reduce vata (dry constitutional type) and increase kapha (wet constitutional type) and was considered energetically cold, sweet tasting, and moistening. Traditional folk practices employed marshmallow to comfort the mucous membranes of the body, as well as an external poultice.
